Everything you need to know about Embassies and Consulates in Jakarta.

Embassies in Jakarta

Embassies in Jakarta are scattered throughout Central and South Jakarta. Since Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia, it hosts many foreign countries who partake in diplomatic relations within the massive archipelago.

According to Wikipedia, there are currently 99 different foreign embassies, high commissions and Apolostolic Nunciature situated in Jakarta.

Jakarta serves as the seat of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Secretariat. As such, Jakarta is largely considered to be the diplomatic capital of Southeast Asia. It is also the most populous country in this region of the world, making it a practical choice for foreign consulates and high commissions to be located.

The purpose of this Jakarta Embassy Guide is to provide you with all the information that you need to contact and/or visit any of these embassies. We will first provide you with information about where the embassies in Jakarta are located and then share links to specific articles about each one of the consulates.

Where are Embassies in Jakarta Located?

Unlike many smaller secondary cities around the world, Jakarta has many foreign embassies. Consequently, there simply isn’t enough land for all of them to be situated in one district. Therefore, don’t expect them to be side-by-side right in the heart of central Jakarta. Instead, they are concentrated into different ‘pockets’ throughout the city.

Most of the embassies in Jakarta are located in the following areas:

  • Menteng (Central Jakarta)
  • Thamrin (Central Jakarta)
  • Kuningan (South Jakarta)

Embassies in Menteng Jakarta

Most of the foreign embassies in Menteng are situated to the South of the Monas – the National Monument of Indonesia. This is one of the best areas in the entire city for sightseeing with many attractions nearby. The National Gallery of Indonesia is just one of many museums that are stationed near these embassies in Jakarta.

One of the most notable embassies near the Monas is the US Embassy. It is located only a few hundred meters from the southeast corner of Monument Park.

Most of the other embassies in this area of Jakarta are scattered throughout wealthy residential neighbourhoods. These neighbourhoods have nice tree-lined streets and sidewalks. Some popular points of interest in Menteng include:

  • Taman Suropati
  • Taman Menteng
  • Taman Situ Lembang
  • Jalan Surabaya Antique Market

Embassies in Thamrin (Central Jakarta)

As you move west of Menteng, to the Thamrin are you will find some more embassies in Jakarta. In case you are not familiar with Jakarta, Thamrin is famous for Bundaran HI and the Selamat Datang (Welcome) Monument

Bundaran HI is a massive, iconic roundabout that is surrounded by some of Jakarta’s best hotels such as the Grand Hyatt, Hotel Kepinski and the Mandarin Oriental. At the center of the roundabout is the Selamat Datang Monument. This is one of the most photographed areas of Jakarta.

Embassies in this area of Jakarta tend to be located close to Jalan M. H. Thamrin. A noteworthy embassy in this area of Jakarta is the German Embassy. It is situated right beside the Mandarin Oriental Hotel

If you do need to visit an embassy in Thamrin, you can take advantage of the MRT System. The most convenient stations in this area of Jakarta are Bundaran HI MRT Station and Dukuh Atas MRT Station. Thamrin is also famous for shopping opportunities at three of Jakarta’s most popular malls:

  • Grand Indonesia
  • Plaza Indonesia
  • Thamrin City

Embassies in Kuningan (South Jakarta)

There is yet another cluster of embassies in Jakarta that are situated in Kuningan. This is an area of South Jakarta. It is south of Menteng and east of Senayan.

You will find few embassies scattered throughout the northern areas of Kuningan such as the Embassy of Canada. However, most of them are densely packed along Jalan H. R. Rasuna Said about 1.5 km south of the Ritz-Carlton Mega Kuningan

Although the Mega Kuningan are is not as popular as Menteng or Thamrin for sightseeing, it is a great area for shopping and finding awesome hotels. Actually, some of Jakarta’s best hotels are within a 5-minute drive (or less) of the embassies. Some of the best hotels in Mega Kuningan include:

  • Raffles Jakarta
  • Ritz-Carlton Mega Kuningan
  • JW Marriot Hotel Jakarta
  • Oakwood Premier Cozmo Jakarta

There are also various malls not far from the embassies in Kuningan. Some popular choices include:

  • Kota Kasablanka
  • Lotte Shopping Avenue
  • Mall Ambassador
  • Kuningan City Mall
  • ITC Kuningan

There are very few (if any) embassies in Jakarta that are south of Mega Kuningan. As you travel further south it becomes more challenging to access Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
