Karet Station, referred to as Stasiun Karet in Bahasa Indonesia is a commuter station which is located in the southern portion of Tanah Abang, central Jakarta.

Karet Station is situated about 1.5 km south of some of Jakarta’s most popular malls such as Thamrin City, Plaza Indonesia and Grand Indonesia. It is very close to some of Jakarta’s best hotels such as the Shangri-La.

Karet Station is a stop on only one of Jakarta’s commuter lines: the Yellow Line.

The Yellow Line services trains from Jatinegara Station to Bogor, Nambo and Depok which are located south of Jakarta. The Yellow Line is one of, if not the busiest line in the commuter network. It is often called the ‘loop’ line because it runs from east Jakarta, north to Mangga Dua, east to Tanah Abang and then south to Bogor.

The Yellow Line is very busy with daily commuters travelling to and from work.

What are the closest stations to Karet Station?

The closest stations to Karet on the Yellow Line include Tanah Abang Station to the northwest and Sudirman Station to the east.

If you are travelling north, the distance between Karet and Tanah Abang is about 2 km.  

The distance between Karet Station and Sudirman Station is much shorter at 800 meters.

Since Karet Station is only part of the Yellow Line it is not possible to transfer lines there. However, if you want to transfer to the Green Line which services trains from Tanah Abang Station to Rangkasbitung, then simply travel on stop west to Tanah Abang.

You can also get to the Red and Blue Lines by travelling to Manggarai Station which is two stations to the east. From there you will be able to take trains to destinations such as Kota Tua, the Monas, Bekasi and Cikarang.

What is located around Stasiun Karet in Jakarta?

The direct area around Karet Station isn’t particularly well known for attractions, but it is quite convenient if you are planning on shopping.  

There are excellent malls and markets that can be reached quite easily from the station, and also excellent hotels to choose from.

The closest shopping centers to the north of Karet Station include Thamrin City, Grand Indonesia and Plaza Indonesia.  These are all located only about 1.5 km away from the Station. If you want to walk to these malls, it should take you about 20 minutes. To drive, expect it to take around 15 minutes depending on the traffic.

Thamrin City is more popular with local shoppers, whereas Grand Indonesia and Plaza Indonesia are popular with expats and foreign tourists.

The closest mall to the south of Karet Station is Citywalk Sudirman. This is a small shopping centre with some nice cafes on the ground floor. The distance between Citywalk Sudirman and Karet Station is about 1 km.  This area is often quite busy with traffic so expect it to take over twenty minutes to walk or drive between these two locations.

Karet Station is not too far from some of Jakarta’s best accommodation choices. The Shangri-la Hotel, for instance is only 400 m away.  You can walk there in only 5 minutes. This is one of the best hotels in Jakarta.

The All Seasons Jakarta Thamrin Hotel is also a good, but cheaper choice.  It is about 850 m (an 11 minute walk) from Karet Station.

The Liberty Hotel Jakarta is a highly rated 3-star property that is also very close to the All Seasons Hotel.

Many visitors to Jakarta prefer to stay at one of the hotels closer to Thamrin City, Grand Indonesia and Plaza Indonesia because it’s easier for shopping and sightseeing around the Monas.  

Some of the best properties within walking distance of these malls include: The Mandarin Oriental, Hotel Indonesia Kempinski Jakarta, Grand Hyatt Jakarta and Keraton at the Plaza a Luxury Collection Hotel. All of these properties are positively reviewed by both local and international visitors to Jakarta.

If you decide to stay around Karet Station, then you will also be able to access some of Jakarta’s busiest markets in Tanah Abang.

To do so, just take the commuter 1 station north on the Yellow Line to Tanah Abang Station.  From there, you can walk to a whole range of lively markets with 10 minutes of the Station.
