Tanah Abang Station is a stop on two of Jakarta’s commuter lines: the Yellow Line and the Green Line.
The Yellow Line services trains from Jatinegara Station to Bogor, Nambo and Depok which are located south of Jakarta.
Tanah Abang Station is also the first and northernmost Station on the Green Line which connects Tanah Abang with destinations to the southwest such as Serpong, Parung Panjang, Maja and Rangkasbitung.

There are also many traditional market buildings within walking distance of Tanah Abang Station.
Pasar Tanah Abang Blok M is one example. Pasar Tanah Abang Blok M is only 700 meters south of Tanah Abang Station and it should only take you about 8 minutes to walk there.
Just a few minutes past Pasar Tanah Abang Blok M you will have the choice to visit two more affordable markets that also within walking distance of Tanah Abang Station: Tanah Abang Market Block C and Tanah Abang Textile Market.
Both of these are about a 10 minute walk from Tanah Abang Station and they are located directly across from each other. Therefore, it’s easy to check both of these out during the same visit to Tanah Abang.
Although there is a wide selection of goods to purchase in Tanah Abang, textiles would have to be the specialty in this area. There is no shortage of warehouses selling everything from Indian inspired clothing, Middle Eastern and of course, Indonesian. This is also considered to be one of the cheapest areas in Jakarta to buy fabric, including the ever-popular Indonesian Batik.
Tanah Abang Textile Market is famous amongst locals for its excellent selection of well-priced batik.
The Textile Museum is also an interesting place to check out while you’re in the Tanah Abang area.
It has a nice, albeit small collection of historic Indonesian fabrics on display with many being batik.
At the back of the Textile Museum you can also make your own traditional batik which is a highly recommended activity while in Jakarta. Conveniently, the Textile Museum is only 600 meters from Tanah Abang Station. You can easily walk there in under 10 minutes or drive there in about the same amount of time.
Although Tanah Abang Station is very interesting for sight-seeing you might find it too busy to stay in this area.
Most visitors to Jakarta prefer to stay near the Monas or near the malls in Thamrin (Thamrin City, Grand Indonesia, or Plaza Indonesia) where it’s a bit quieter in comparison.
