Getting from the Jakarta Airport to Bundaran HI
This article is intended to provide you with a step-by-step overview on how to get from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to Bundaran HI in central Jakarta.
Bundaran HI is one of the most famous places in all of Jakarta because of its prominent location in Thamrin, central Jakarta. Bundaran, in case you do not speak Bahasa Indonesian, is the Bahasa Indonesian translation for ‘roundabout’.
Bundaran HI is a famous roundabout that encircles (the also very famous) Selamat Datang Monument. This is one of the most iconic symbols of Jakarta. The second component of Bundaran HI stands for ‘Hotel Indonesia’. The roundabout is surrounded by some of the best and most popular luxury hotels in the entire city such as:
If you have the budget, the direct area around Bundaran HI is one of the best areas to stay in all of Jakarta. Not only will you be able to access these hotels, but you will also be within 1 minute of Bundaran HI MRT Station.

Bundaran HI MRT Station is right in the heart of central Jakarta and it is also only 4-5 minutes away from Plaza Indonesia and Grand Indonesia – two of Jakarta’s best shopping malls.
If you land at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport you will have the choice to take the Airport Railink Train, bus, private car (Go or Grab) or a taxi into the city center. This article is not going to focus on taking a car or bus because we want to describe how to avoid traffic after you land in Jakarta.
If you arrive in Jakarta late at night or really early in the morning you might be able to just take a taxi into the city center. You might not get much traffic. But throughout the day and during the early evening, traffic can be very heavy.
You could stay at an airport hotel and wait until the traffic subsides or you could take the train into the city.
This is going to be a guide on how to get to Bundaran HI from the airport (Soekarno-Hatta International Airport). Keep in mind that there is another airport in Jakarta called Halim Perdanakusuma Airport. Fewer international flights land there in comparison to Soekarno-Hatta.
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to get from the airport to Bundaran HI by airport train.
Step #1: Arrive at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and find your terminal train station.
Once you have landed at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport you should pass through immigration, collect your luggage and exit the airport.
They now have clear signs within the airport directing you to the airport train into Jakarta. There are currently three terminals at Soekarno-Hatta – Terminal 1, 2 and 3.
Regardless of which terminal you arrive at follow the signs and go to the train station in front of your terminal. Since Terminal 3 is so large, there are actually two train stations there.
It should only take you about 3 minutes to reach any of the stations from the airport.
Step #2: Take the airport train to the Soekarno-Hatta Integrated Train Station (SHIA)
Once you have got to the station at your terminal in the airport take this free service to the Soekarno-Hatta Integrated Train Station (SHIA). This is also commonly called ‘Jakarta Airport Railway Station.’
This is the place where Railink trains bound for central Jakarta depart from. If you want to get from the airport to Bundaran HI by train you have to go here.
The closest station to SHIA is Terminal 1 and the farthest away is Terminal 3. Regardless, is should only take you about 5 minutes to reach SHIA from any of the terminal train stations (possibly even less).
Step #3: Purchase your Railink Train ticket to BNI Station (formerly called Sudirman Baru Station)
You can easily purchase a ticket to BNI (City) Station once you arrive at SHIA.
BNI Station is the closest station to the MRT Line in Jakarta. Therefore, if you want to bypass the traffic it is important that you go to BNI Station which is located south of Bundaran HI in central Jakarta.
While at SHIA you can either buy your ticket at the ticket counter or using a machine. Either way, just make sure that you buy it for the correct station.
Check your ticket time and wait for your train to depart from SHIA at the airport to BNI.
SHIA has some restaurants where you can eat while waiting for your train into central Jakarta.
Step #4: Take the Jakarta Airport Railink Train to BNI City Station
The Jakarta Airport Railink Train should take you about 40-50 minutes to reach BNI City Station in Central Jakarta. The line is actually built on pre-existing commuter line so although the trains to Jakarta are modern, the rail track isn’t.
The trains are fully air-conditioned and quite comfortable.
You can expect the Airport Rail Link will make brief stops at Batu Ceper Station and Duri Station before reaching BNI City Station.

Step #5: Transfer from BNI Station to Dukuh Atas MRT Station
Once you arrive at BNI (City) Station in central Jakarta you can walk over to Dukuh Atas MRT Station.
Dukuh Atas MRT Station is located about 200 meters to the east of BNI City Station.
Currently, you cannot walk underground between these stations. But hopefully in the near future that is something that is done.
Dukuh Atas MRT Station has multiple entrances with elevators, escalators, and stairs. So if you are carrying lots of luggage you can still use an elevator to head underground to the MRT platforms.
Step #6: Take MRT Jakarta from Dukuh Atas Station to Bundaran HI MRT Station
Pay for your MRT ticket and then travel only 1 station north from Dukuh Atas to Bundaran HI MRT Station.
This literally should take you only about 2 minutes.
Once you exit Bundaran HI MRT Station you will be about 200 meters away from Bundaran HI, the Selamat Datang (Welcome Monument) and these hotels:
When you exit the MRT system you will have to use the same card/ticket to tap out. Therefore, don’t lose it!
